Amazon Basics SW-802C-K (book safe) review
A diversion safe shaped like a book, with a fabric cover and spine and a three-digit combination lock. Amazon Basics states it is meant to sit between other books on a shelf.
The conclusion Concealment, not security. Fine for keeping something out of sight; wrong for anything that matters.
This is not a safe and this page will not treat it as one. It is a hiding
place shaped like a book.
What concealment actually buys
Time and indifference. Somebody moving quickly through a house takes what is
visible, and something that looks like a paperback on a shelf is not visible.
For a spare key, a small amount of cash or a document you would rather a
visitor did not read, that is a reasonable and cheap arrangement.
Why it is not more than that
Diversion safes are famous. A bookshelf is one of the first places searched,
and a book that is stiff, heavy and does not open reveals itself the moment
somebody touches it. The three-digit lock — a thousand combinations — is
irrelevant, because anybody who has it in their hands has already won.
The honest use
Out of sight, not out of reach. A spare car key. A little cash. Nothing
irreplaceable, nothing whose loss would be a serious event, and nothing you
would be relying on a safe for.
Where the real answer is
Two shelves down in this catalog: a steel safe bolted through its base into
a concrete floor. That is a different product solving a different problem, and
it is the one for anything that matters.
Who it suits
A household wanting something out of casual sight.

What reassures, and what does not
Strengths
Concealment rather than resistance — a different and sometimes better strategy
Among the cheapest items in the safe hubs
Fabric cover and spine, so it reads as a book at a glance
Portable, and can be moved between rooms
Compromises
Three digits is a thousand combinations — trivial to work through
A book that is heavier and stiffer than its neighbors is noticeable
No fire protection, no anchoring, no real resistance

The questions we are asked
Do diversion safes work?
Against an opportunist in a hurry, sometimes. Against anybody who has heard of them — which is most people — no, because a shelf is the first place they are looked for and the book that does not bend gives itself away instantly. Treat it as hiding something from a casual visitor, not from a burglar.
Is a three-digit lock a problem?
A thousand combinations is nothing to somebody sitting with it. But the lock is not the security here — the concealment is — and if it has been found the lock was never going to matter. Do not read the combination as protection.
What should go in it?
Something you want out of sight rather than out of reach: a spare key, a small amount of cash, a document you do not want casually read. Nothing whose loss would be serious, and nothing irreplaceable.
