Amazon Basics 25EI review

A 14-liter steel safe with a digital keypad, two emergency override keys kept separately, concealed hinges described as anti-pry, and a removable adjustable shelf. It runs on four AA cells.

The conclusion The sensible default. Enough capacity to be used, small enough to hide, and it needs bolting like everything else here.

If a household buys one safe, this size is usually the right one.

Why 14 liters is the useful number

Below about ten liters, a safe holds a passport and some cash and then becomes an irritation — documents have to be folded, nothing stacks, and the shelf is in the way. At fourteen, with a removable adjustable shelf, it holds the household’s papers, some jewelry and a camera, sorted rather than piled.

It is also still small enough to bolt into the base of a wardrobe, which is where it should go.

Concealed hinges

Exposed hinges are a route: cut the pins and the door leaves from the hinge side while the bolts are still engaged. Concealing them inside the body closes it. Amazon Basics states them as anti-pry, and it is a feature cheaper safes still omit.

The override keys

Two, and they open it completely. They belong outside the house — a relative, a workplace, a bank box. A set in the bedside drawer means the keypad is decoration.

What is not published

Steel thickness, and any security grade or fire rating. This is a deterrent safe rather than a certified one, and it should be read as protecting against opportunism.

Who it suits

Most households, once.

  • 14 liters — genuinely usable capacity for the money
  • Concealed hinges, described as anti-pry by the manufacturer
  • Adjustable removable shelf, so the space is actually usable
  • Carpeted base so it does not mark a floor or scratch contents

Compromises

  • No published steel thickness or security grade
  • No fire protection
  • 4 × AA cells not supplied
  • Override keys are the whole security if they are stored badly

The questions we are asked

Why do concealed hinges matter?

Because exposed hinges can be attacked directly: cut the pins and the door comes off the other side, regardless of the bolts. Concealing them inside the body removes that route. It is a basic feature that cheaper safes still leave out.

Is 14 liters enough?

For most households, yes — passports, deeds, jewelry, a camera, some cash, with the shelf separating them. It is the size at which a safe stops being a box for a passport and starts being usable, and it is still small enough to bolt inside a wardrobe.

Where should it go?

Bolted through the base into a solid floor, inside a wardrobe or a cupboard, at the back. Concealment and anchoring together are worth more than either alone: something that cannot be found is not attacked, and something that cannot be carried is not taken.
