The best security cylinders for 2026

A euro cylinder is the part of a door lock that gets attacked, and the attack is almost always the same: the barrel is gripped and snapped at its weakest cross-section. Cylinders that address this carry a sacrificial front section designed to break away and leave the mechanism intact, plus hardened pins against drilling. Manufacturers state resistance as an EN 1303 grade, which is a declared figure rather than a measurement made here. The other half of the job is length: a cylinder protruding past the handle plate is the one that gets gripped. No cylinder in this hub describes snap or drill protection, and only one states testing to EN 1303, with no grade. So we compare the standard cited where there is one, keys and code cards, keyed-alike sets, and sizing.

The models we recommend

  1. ABUS D6XNP 30/30

    30/30 mm (1.18 in) · anti-pick pins · emergency function · 5 reversible keys · code card

ABUS's everyday euro cylinder: special pins for pick and manipulation resistance, an emergency function that works with a key in the other side, and five reversible keys with a code card for reordering.

Best for: Replacing a builder's cylinder on a front door, at the smallest sensible price.

    7.2/10

    ≈ $54

  2. ABUS D6XNP 40/50

    40/50 mm (1.97 in) · usable in either orientation · anti-pick pins · emergency function · 5 keys

The same D6XNP cylinder in 40/50, for a thicker door or a door with a heavier handle set. ABUS states it can be fitted in either orientation, with the same emergency function, pins and code card.

Best for: A thicker door, or one where the 30/30 measured short.

    7.8/10

    ≈ $72

  3. ToniTec TEC440 30/30K

30/30 with inside thumbturn · Titalium · 6 keys · for doors opened without a key inside

The thumbturn version of the TEC440: a knob on the inside instead of a keyway, so the door opens from within without a key. Same Titalium body and six reversible keys.

Best for: A front door that should always open from inside without hunting for a key — which is most front doors.

    7.8/10

  4. ToniTec TEC440 30/40

30/40 mm (1.57 in) · Titalium body, anodized · emergency function · 6 reversible keys · code card

ToniTec's TEC440, made by ABUS, in a Titalium alloy with an anodized finish for corrosion resistance. Six reversible keys, an emergency function, and a code card for reordering.

Best for: An exposed door — coastal, north-facing, or a garage side door where corrosion ends cylinders.

    7.8/10

  5. Jeriup JLC-032SB-1 mortise and rim cylinder, 32 mm, dimple keyway, 5 keys

A RIM AND MORTISE cylinder, not a euro profile one · 1-1/4 in (32 mm) overall · solid brass, stated as "copper (solid brass)" · DIMPLE keyway with 2.5 mm (0.10 in) key thickness, the only keyway type named on this shelf · five keys · the maker itself says to compare the dimensions in the images before buying · no EN 1303 grade, no anti-snap, no anti-drill

A rim and mortise cylinder rather than a euro one — with a dimple keyway, five keys, and a maker who tells you to check the size first.

Best for: Replacing the cylinder in an existing rim or mortise lock on a wooden, aluminum, storm or patio door

    ≈ $31

  6. Zopsc Euro profile cylinder, 60 mm in 30/30, three keys

60 mm (2.36 in) in a 30/30 split — the only split dimension published on this shelf, and the figure this shelf's buying tip asks for · 100,000-cycle durability rating · spool pins against picking, a hardened steel insert against drilling · "premium copper", glossed nowhere · NO EN 1303 grade and NO anti-snap section

The one euro cylinder here that gives its split dimension — and it says nothing about snapping, which is the attack this shelf is built around.

Best for: A wooden or aluminum door already measured at 30/30, where picking and drilling are the concern

    ≈ $27

  7. BASI V55 (keyed-alike pair)

Two 30/30 cylinders keyed alike · 10 keys · emergency function · tested to EN 1303:2015

Two cylinders that take the same key, with ten keys between them. BASI states the V55 range is tested to EN 1303:2015 and supplied direct from the manufacturer, with an emergency function on both.

Best for: A front and back door, or a house and a garage, that should share one key.

    7.8/10

  8. GERCAR MLBL-60P3

Three 30/30 cylinders keyed alike · solid brass, matt nickel · 15 keys · 5 and 8 cm (3.1 in) screws

Three keyed-alike cylinders in solid brass with a matt nickel finish, and fifteen keys between them. GERCAR states stock keying, which is what makes a three-cylinder set affordable, and supplies both 50 and 80 mm (3.15 in) fixing screws.

Best for: A house with three doors — front, back and garage — that should all take one key.

    8.4/10

The need before the model, across security cylinders

Equipping several people

The number of keys supplied decides how many occupants are equipped without copying. On a protected cylinder, copying is controlled and expensive.

Matching the door

Cylinder length is a strict dimension. Too long, it protrudes and offers a grip; too short, it does not work.

Carrying a verifiable certification

A cylinder sold as reinforced with no reference to a standard commits nobody on its resistance. In this hub, the BASI V55 pair is the only one stated as “tested to EN 1303:2015”, with no grade code; the GERCAR set claims grade 2 “on the essential points”, with no certificate; the rest cite no standard.

Who buys what, across security cylinders

Moving in
Changing the cylinder is the first thing to do in a home whose key history you do not know.
Service door
A quality cylinder on a weak door does not help much. The chain is worth what its weakest link is worth.
Several doors
Several doors open with one key if the cylinders are keyed alike: either bought as a set, like the BASI pair or the GERCAR trio, or ordered later with the code card.

Nothing is free: the trade-offs of security cylinders

Copy protection against convenience
An ownership card prevents unauthorized copying and imposes a procedure for every extra key. That is the price of the security.
Length against protrusion
A cylinder protruding from the escutcheon offers a grip to pull it out. It should barely stand out from the door at all.
Cylinder alone against the whole door
A top-of-the-range cylinder on a hollow door changes nothing. The overall level is judged on the door, frame and lock together.

Buyers’ questions on security cylinders

How do I measure a cylinder?

Two dimensions either side of the fixing screw, measured separately. A cylinder is not always symmetrical: 30/30, 30/40, 40/50.

Should the cylinder protrude?

As little as possible: a few millimeters of protrusion are enough to offer a grip. A cylinder guard compensates for unavoidable protrusion.

What is an ownership card?

A document that governs the copying of keys. Without it, a locksmith cannot duplicate, which is the point.

Should the cylinder be changed when moving in?

You never know how many keys are in circulation. It is a basic and inexpensive precaution.

Is a good cylinder enough?

No: it protects against picking and against the cylinder being pulled out. A hollow door or a weak frame gives way elsewhere.

What do the certification levels mean?

They express a measured resistance to various attacks by an independent body. That is more reliable than a manufacturer's own scale.

Can I have the same key for several doors?

Yes, if the cylinders are keyed alike. The simplest way is to buy them as a set — the BASI V55 pair, the GERCAR trio; otherwise, the code card lets you order another cylinder on the same key.

Can the cylinder be changed by yourself?

It is a simple operation on a standard lock: one screw, and the cylinder comes out with the key engaged. The difficulty is measuring correctly.

What to take away from security cylinders

Measure the two dimensions separately either side of the screw: a cylinder is not always symmetrical. It should barely protrude — a few millimeters are enough to offer a grip — and an excellent cylinder on a hollow door changes nothing.

Security cylinders, side by side

There is no table here, and the reason is in the listings. The figure published most often across these 8 products is keys, given by 6 of them — short of the four in five a column needs to compare rather than to display gaps. Each product page says what its own maker published.
