The best fireproof safes for 2026

A fire rating is two numbers and both are stated by the manufacturer: how long the safe was held in a furnace, and what internal temperature it did not exceed. The second is where document safes and media safes part company — paper chars around 175 °C (347 °F), while a hard drive or a memory card is damaged far lower, so a safe rated for documents is not rated for a backup drive. Here only the Amazon Basics FP1401M publishes its class (UL 72 Class 350, for paper), only the Master Lock L1200 states verification for CDs, DVDs and USB drives, and the two JUNDUN pouches state no duration at all. Five of the six also claim water resistance, which matters because a fire is followed by hoses. We compare stated duration and class, media protection, water resistance, anchoring and lock type.

The need before the model, across fireproof safes

Protecting the contents from fire

The stated duration and internal temperature decide what the safe protects. The Amazon Basics FP1401M is the only one to publish its class — UL 72 Class 350, the interior below 350 °F for 30 minutes at 1,549 °F; HMF and Master Lock state 30 minutes at 1,549 °F without a class, BURG-WÄCHTER UL 72 and 30 minutes, and the JUNDUN pouches no duration.

Not leaving under someone’s arm

A light fireproof box leaves with what it protects. The BURG-WÄCHTER FP 22 K is the only one in this hub whose listing provides for floor fixing, with a 30-minute UL 72 rating.

Matching what goes inside

A safe certified for paper lets a USB stick or a drive melt long before its limit. The Master Lock L1200 is the only one to state, on top of its UL classification for documents, ETL verification for CDs, DVDs and USB drives; no box in this hub states protection for a hard drive.

Master Lock L1200

Who buys what, across fireproof safes

Paper documents
Paper degrades at a temperature far below the one that destroys digital media. The certifications distinguish the two.
Digital media
A drive or a memory stick is destroyed at far lower temperatures than paper, and a safe certified for paper does not protect them. Here only the Master Lock L1200 states verification for CDs, DVDs and USB drives.
Theft and fire
The two resistances are independent. A fireproof safe can be very easy to open, and the reverse is true too.

Nothing is free: the trade-offs of fireproof safes

Fire resistance against burglary resistance
They are two distinct certifications that cannot be deduced from one another. A light fireproof safe can simply be carried off.
Insulation against volume and weight
Fireproof insulation is thick and heavy. The interior volume of a fireproof safe is far smaller than its footprint.
Paper certification against digital media
A certification for paper documents guarantees nothing for a drive. A certification specific to digital media is needed.

Buyers’ questions on fireproof safes

Does a fireproof safe protect against theft?

Not necessarily: they are two distinct certifications. A light, unanchored fireproof safe is carried off without difficulty.

How long are the contents protected?

The certified duration is stated and corresponds to a standardized test. Beyond it, the protection ends.

Will a hard drive survive in a fireproof safe?

Only if the safe is certified for digital media, whose destruction threshold is far lower than that of paper.

Does the insulation degrade?

On some models the insulation absorbs moisture over time. A safe exposed to damp can lose performance.

Should it be opened immediately after a fire?

No: the contents stay very hot and opening early exposes the paper to hot air. Let it cool completely.

Is the safe watertight?

Not automatically, and water from firefighting is a frequent cause of damage. Five of the six models in this hub state water resistance, not the BURG-WÄCHTER; none publishes an immersion depth or duration.

Should it be anchored anyway?

Yes: protection against fire says nothing about protection against being carried off. Anchoring is still necessary.

What to take away from fireproof safes

Fire resistance and burglary resistance are two independent certifications: a light fireproof safe is carried off. Paper certification does not protect a hard drive, whose threshold is far lower — and after a fire, let it cool completely before opening.
