The best water leak detectors for 2026

A leak detector costs a few dollars and sits under the appliance most likely to ruin a floor. The distinction worth understanding is local versus remote: a standalone sensor sounds where it is, which is useless if the leak starts while you are away, whereas a connected one sends a notification and needs a hub to do it. The second is the sensing element — feet on the base of the unit detect water that reaches it, a remote probe or a sensing cable detects water somewhere awkward, such as behind a washing machine. We compare siren volume, alerting, sensing elements and battery life; no detector in this hub states control of a shut-off valve.

The models we recommend

  1. X-Sense SWS0B Wi-Fi water leak detector and freeze alarm, no hub, 1-pack

Wi-Fi direct with NO HUB REQUIRED, stated in the title · leak AND freeze · one detector, eighteen dollars — the cheapest connected detector on this shelf · AND THE LISTING HAS NO BULLET POINTS AT ALL: the title is the entire published specification

The cheapest connected detector here, on the only listing on this shelf with nothing written on it but its title.

Best for: One cheap connected sensor from a smoke-alarm maker, bought with questions asked first

    ≈ $18

  2. ABUS HSWM10000

85 dB · two floor probes · stands on the floor · basement, laundry, kitchen, utility room

A standalone water alarm that stands on the floor with two probes underneath. ABUS states an 85 dB tone that sounds as long as the probes are in contact with water or another conductive liquid.

Best for: The floor beside a washing machine, a dishwasher or a water heater.

    6.9/10

  3. SEBSON WD_GS153

85 dB · sealed 10-year lithium battery · miniature floor sensor

A miniature floor sensor with a sealed lithium battery that SEBSON states lasts ten years. No battery to change, and no battery compartment to corrode.

Best for: A place you will not revisit — under a bath, behind a built-in appliance, beside a boxed-in water heater.

    7.5/10

  4. Aqara TZ-005 Water Leak Sensor, Zigbee, 3-pack

DETECTS WATER AS LOW AS 0.5 MM — the only sensitivity figure on this shelf · Zigbee, triggering the hub's local alarm and other Aqara devices · IP67 with a rust-proof coating · AN AQARA HUB IS REQUIRED, not included, and NOT third-party — with the sensor stated to need to be within 10 m (33 ft) of it, the shortest range here · three sensors

The only detector here that says how little water it needs — half a millimeter — and the only one that must stay within thirty-three feet of its hub.

Best for: An Aqara household with the hub nearby, where half a millimeter of water should start an automation

    ≈ $55

  5. eufy Security T8920 water and freeze sensor, HomeBase required

Water AND freeze below freezing point · IP65 · a SINGLE REPLACEABLE battery lasting up to 2 years · Sub-1G connectivity to HomeBase, stated stable all round the home AND YARD · HomeBase 2 or 3 REQUIRED and not included · optional 24/7 protection service · NO siren of its own · no shut-off valve

A silent sensor that reaches across a garden on Sub-1G radio — if you already own the HomeBase it will not work without.

Best for: A eufy household with a HomeBase already fitted, and an outbuilding or a garden tap to watch

    ≈ $35

  6. GoveeLife H5059 water leak detector, 105 dB adjustable alarm, 5-pack

105 dB WITH FOUR ADJUSTABLE VOLUME SETTINGS — the only adjustable alarm on this shelf · 2 sets of sensor probes · a built-in battery lasting 5 years · IP67 · FIVE detectors · and the first bullet is a warning: the app needs an H5044 gateway that is NOT INCLUDED and that the maker's own H5040 and H5043 gateways CANNOT replace

Five IP67 detectors with a volume you can turn down — and a first bullet that spends itself explaining what you also have to buy.

Best for: Five local alarms around a house, by anyone who will not be using the app

    ≈ $43

  7. Flood Buzz FB-6-C small water leak alarm, 6-pack

NO APP, NO HUB, NO SETUP: a factory-sealed pre-tested battery, open the box and place it · up to 95 dB at the leak · a REPLACE-BY DATE STAMPED ON THE HOUSING, the only visible expiry on this shelf · up to 3 years · 1.75 × 1.5 × 1.5 in, small enough for a dishwasher kick plate · two metal prongs on the base · reusable after wiping dry · patented, made by a New Jersey family firm

The only detector here with nothing to set up and nothing to connect — and the only one that prints its own expiry date where you can see it.

Best for: Six awkward spots — behind a toilet, under a kick plate, in a drain pan — with no app and no account

    ≈ $46

  8. RESIDEO CHW3610W8001 L1 Wi-Fi water leak and freeze detector

THE ONLY SENSING CABLE ON THIS SHELF: 5 ft supplied, detecting along its entire length, extendable to 500 FT · leak, freeze AND humidity out of range · 100 dB alarm plus LED status and mobile push and email · Wi-Fi with no hub · reusable after a reset · pairs with the L5 Wi-Fi shut-off valve · no battery life published

The only detector here that can be laid along a wall rather than left on a floor — five feet as supplied, five hundred if you need it.

Best for: A basement, a utility room or a run of pipework, where the leak will not come to the sensor

    ≈ $62

  9. YoLink YS1603+4YS7903 Leak Sensor 1 kit, 4 sensors and a hub

SILENT BY DESIGN, and the listing says so: "Leak Sensor 1 has NO BUILT-IN SIREN" · four sensors and the hub · LoRa to 1/4 mile open air · app, email and SMS alerts · Control-D2D triggers a YoLink siren or shut-off valve with NO internet · one hub carries 300+ devices · no battery life published

A detector that makes no sound at all, and a listing that volunteers the fact in its own fourth bullet.

Best for: A house where the alert should go to a phone and a valve, not to an empty room at three in the morning

    ≈ $60

  10. GOMETY XL002 (3-pack)

90 dB · three units · two electrodes on the base · wall or floor · ABS

Three water alarms at 90 dB with two electrodes on the base, which GOMETY states trigger immediately on contact with water. Wall or floor mounting, in ABS plastic, with no wiring or programming.

    8.1/10

  11. Summit Digital GS153 (3-pack)

    85 dB · three units · 60 × 60 × 24.2 mm (2.36 × 2.36 × 0.95 in) · 3 V lithium cell · rising-water detection

Three compact detectors with published dimensions and a 3 V lithium cell, which Summit Digital states detect ingress, rising water and flooding through two contact points on the underside.

Best for: A cellar or a basement where rising water rather than a burst hose is the risk.

    8.1/10

  12. Vaileal TZ058 (2-pack)

135 dB · two per pack · floor or wall mounting · no wiring, no programming

Two water alarms at 135 dB, which Vaileal states can be laid on the floor or hung on a wall, with no wiring, no buttons and no programming — the lid opens, the battery goes in, and it works.

Best for: Two locations at once, where the alarm has to be heard through a closed door.

    7.5/10

  13. X-Sense SWS54

Wi-Fi · push notifications · 2 upper and 4 lower sensors · sounds locally and on the base

A connected leak detector: X-Sense states six sensing points — two upper and four lower — with a push notification to a phone as well as a local alarm and a tone from the base station.

Best for: A property you leave — a holiday home, a second home, or any house whose owners work away.

    8.1/10

  14. YoLink YS1603+6YS7906 Leak Sensor 4 kit, 105 dB alarm, 6 sensors and a hub

SIX sensors AND the hub, each with a 105 dB on-site alarm · LoRa to 2,034 ft open air · app, email AND SMS alerts · Control-D2D triggers a YoLink siren or SHUT-OFF VALVE WITH NO INTERNET — the only such statement on this shelf · 2 AAA per sensor, up to 5 YEARS · one hub carries 300+ devices

The only kit here whose shut-off valve still fires when the broadband is down, with six sensors, a hub and five-year batteries.

Best for: A whole house, a basement or an outbuilding beyond Wi-Fi reach, where a valve must close during a power cut

    ≈ $93

The need before the model, across water leak detectors

Being alerted loudly

The alarm sound level decides whether it is heard from another room. An alert inaudible in a cellar is of no use.

Vaileal TZ058 (2-pack)

Covering several points

Leaks happen under a washing machine, a water heater or a sink. A multipack covers all the sensitive points in a home.

GOMETY XL002 (3-pack)

Warning when nobody is home

A siren in an empty basement warns nobody over a weekend. The X-Sense Wi-Fi detector connects directly, with no hub, and is the least expensive connected one in this hub; the YoLink, Aqara, eufy and Govee sets need their own hub or app.

Who buys what, across water leak detectors

Household appliance
Washing machines and dishwashers are common sources. A detector on the floor behind the appliance costs a few euros.
Water heater and boiler room
A leak in a rarely visited room is discovered too late. That is the case where a detector brings the most.
Three weeks away with nobody in the house
A local detector sounds into the void if nobody is there. Remote notification then becomes essential.

Nothing is free: the trade-offs of water leak detectors

Local alert against notification
A standalone detector sounds on the spot and warns nobody remotely; a connected model alerts anywhere and depends on a network and a hub.
Detecting against shutting off
The detector signals; only a motorized valve stops the water supply. Detecting without being able to shut off strongly limits the point when you are away.
A probe in the box or at the end of a lead
A unit on the floor detects at its own position; a probe on the end of a cable slides under an appliance without moving it.

Buyers’ questions on water leak detectors

Where should a detector go?

At the lowest point where the water will reach: under an appliance, behind a tank, at the foot of a trap. A few centimeters out is enough to detect nothing.

Does the detector shut the water off?

No: it alerts. Only a motorized valve linked to the detector closes the supply, and that is a separate device.

Does it work without internet?

Standalone models sound on the spot. Remote notification depends on a network and often on a hub.

How long does a leak detector's cell last?

Generally several years. Periodic testing is still necessary: a forgotten detector may have been out of service for a long time.

Do I need one detector per room?

One per sensitive point rather than per room: under every appliance connected to water, and at the foot of every tank or valve.

Does the detector survive immersion?

It detects shallow water and is not designed to stay submerged. A flooded detector may stop working.

Should it be tested?

A few drops on the contacts are enough to check it triggers. An annual test is a reasonable habit.

What to take away from water leak detectors

Put the detector at the lowest point the water will reach: a few centimeters out is enough to detect nothing. It alerts and shuts nothing off — only a motorized valve closes the supply — and a detector never tested may have been out of service for years.

The gist of water leak detectors, at a glance

  • Alarm: 85 to 135 dB, on 7 of the 14 models.
  • Contents: 2 to 3 detectors, on 3 of the 14 models.
  • Sensitivity: 0.4 to 0.5 mm (0.02 in), on 3 of the 14 models.

Water leak detectors, side by side

There is no table here, and the reason is in the listings. Enough of these 14 products name the same row — battery — for a column to qualify, and too few publish a figure in it: the column would compare blanks rather than models. Each product page says what its own maker published.
