HMF 250423 review
An A4 fire and water resistant document box in thermoplastic polycarbonate with a cement-bonded fire layer, which HMF states protects papers for up to 30 minutes.
The conclusion The A4 option, with a construction described and UL 72 stated at 843 °C (1549 °F) for 30 minutes. Good box; only the class is left unwritten.
Most fire boxes are sized for passports. This one is sized for the documents
that are actually A4.
Why the size is the point
Deeds, surveys, certificates, insurance schedules and wills are A4, and
folding them creates a crease that becomes a tear. A box that takes them flat
costs more shelf space and keeps the papers usable.
At 36.5 × 32 × 15.5 cm (14.4 × 12.6 × 6.1 in) it is large for what it holds, and that is the trade.
The construction, which HMF describes
A thermoplastic polycarbonate shell around a cement-bonded fire layer. That is
the standard mechanism: the material holds water chemically and releases it as
steam under heat, keeping the interior cool for as long as the water lasts.
Describing it at all is more than most listings manage.
What the rating says
HMF states UL 72 certification: thirty minutes at 843 °C (1,550 °F). The
listing does not state the class; for paper, UL 72 uses Class 350, which keeps
the inside below 350 °F (177 °C) — a figure HMF does not write itself.
The listing adds 72 hours of water resistance, with no immersion depth.
Not a safe
It locks with a cylinder, but 8.2 kg (18 lb) still leaves under one arm, and HMF
itself advises a fixed place. Security is a separate product.
Who it suits
A household whose important papers are A4 and should stay flat.

The questions we are asked
Why does keeping A4 flat matter?
Because folding a deed, a certificate or a survey creates a crease that eventually tears, and because a folded document is harder to find in a hurry. If the papers are A4 and important, a box that takes them flat is worth the extra size.
What is missing from the rating?
The class. HMF states UL 72 certification at 843 °C (1,550 °F) for thirty minutes without writing the class; for paper, the standard uses Class 350, which keeps the inside below 350 °F (177 °C). The boxes here that write “Class 350” can be judged without that inference.
Is cement-bonded fire material any good?
It is the standard approach: a layer that holds water chemically and releases it as steam under heat, keeping the interior cool while it lasts. Describing the construction at all is more than most makers do; the internal limit follows from the UL 72 class.
