HMF 4612112 review

A furniture safe for A5 documents with a freely programmable three-to-eight digit code, a silenceable keypad and a manual override. HMF publishes the steel thicknesses: 1 mm (0.04 in) walls and a 3 mm (0.12 in) door.

The conclusion The only safe here whose maker publishes the wall thickness as well as the door. Judge it on that number and bolt it down.

HMF publishes something almost nobody in this category does: how thick the metal is. One millimeter of wall, three of door.

What that number means

It means this safe resists hands, a screwdriver and a determined teenager, and it does not resist a cordless angle grinder. That is the honest reading, and it applies to most safes at this price whether or not their makers say so.

Publishing it is to HMF’s credit, and it is the reason this page can describe the safe accurately rather than in adjectives.

Not a fire safe

Single-walled, with no insulating layer. A fire safe is two skins with fire material between them, and the documents in this one would not survive a house fire. That is a different product — there is a hub for it in this catalog — and the two should not be confused because both are steel boxes.

The silenceable keypad

Small and genuinely useful. A safe that beeps on every entry announces itself through a wall, and in an apartment or a shared house that is information you would rather not broadcast.

The rule that governs all of them

Bolt it down. An A5 furniture safe is carried out under one arm otherwise, and everything above becomes academic.

Who it suits

A cupboard, a wardrobe or an office, for documents and cash rather than for anything irreplaceable.

What reassures, and what does not

Strengths

  • Steel thicknesses published — 1 mm (0.04 in) walls, 3 mm (0.12 in) door — the Kesser in this hub states only its 4 mm (0.16 in) door
  • Keypad tones can be silenced, which matters in a shared building
  • Freely programmable 3 to 8 digit code
  • Manual override key as well as the code

Compromises

  • 1 mm (0.04 in) walls are thin: this resists hands, not tools
  • A5 capacity only
  • Single-walled body with no insulation — no fire protection
  • Anchoring is still what decides everything

The questions we are asked

Why does publishing the steel thickness matter?

Because it lets you judge the safe honestly instead of guessing. One millimeter of wall and three of door is a deterrent against hands and a screwdriver, and it is not a barrier against a cordless grinder. In this hub, only the Kesser publishes a figure too, for its door: 4 mm (0.16 in).

Silenceable keypad — why?

Because a safe that beeps every time it is opened tells anybody nearby that there is a safe and where it is. In an apartment with thin walls, or a shared house, that is a real consideration.

Is single-wall construction a problem?

It means no fire protection. Fire safes are double-walled with an insulating layer between; this is one skin of steel. Documents inside will not survive a house fire, and the fireproof boxes elsewhere in this catalog are the answer to that different problem.
