A camera that is looking elsewhere is not covering the yard · review
Tapo C51A review
An entry-level 2K motorized camera with color night vision. TP-Link states a 360° sweep, person detection with motion tracking, color at night to 30 m (98 ft) and an IP65 housing.
The conclusion The entry point of the motorized hub and a genuinely good one. Color to 30 m (98 ft) on an entry-level model is the standout figure.
A motorized camera earns its price in gardens with corners. A fixed lens sees
one scene; a head that sweeps 360° covers a yard, a path and a gate from a
single bracket, and this one does it at 2K.
The figure that stands out
Color night vision stated to 30 m (98 ft). In this hub, DEKCO states color at night without a distance, and the TrackMix gives its 30 m (98 ft) in black and white.
Both matter: infrared tells you a person was there, color tells you what they
were wearing.
The mechanism behind it is worth being clear about — the camera lights the
scene itself. That is what makes color possible and what makes the camera
visible at night. There is no version of this trade where you get both.
What it does not have
No optical zoom. The two Reolinks in this hub move glass to bring a distant subject closer; this one enlarges pixels, which is not the same thing. And IP65 rather than the IP66 of the DEKCO: TP-Link states protection against dust and water jets, enough for rain; IP66 also holds against powerful jets.
Tracking
The head follows a detected person, which is useful and leaves the camera
pointed wherever that person went. Set a home position over the entry that matters and the feature costs you nothing.
Audio, storage and subscription
TP-Link states two-way audio, recording to a microSD card of up to 512 GB and, as an option, Tapo Care cloud storage, paid after a free one-month trial. The card is enough to keep recordings: the subscription is not required.
Who it suits
A small or medium garden where one camera should cover several directions.
It is the sensible starting point of this hub.

The questions we are asked
How does it manage color at 30 m (98 ft)?
With its own light. Color at night is not a property of a sensor alone — the camera has to illuminate the scene, and doing so makes it visible. If you want a camera nobody notices, infrared and a monochrome image are the trade.
Is motion tracking the same as auto-tracking?
In practice yes: the head follows a detected subject. The consequence is the same too — after the subject leaves, the camera is pointed wherever they went. Set a home position over your weakest entry so it returns there.
Why is it so much cheaper than the tracking cameras above it?
Largely resolution and optics. Both Reolinks have 4K and zoom: 3× optical on the E1 Outdoor Pro, 6× hybrid with a telephoto lens on the TrackMix. This one has neither, and for a small garden neither is missed.

The buyer this one serves, among security devices
A first motorized camera, where the sweep matters more than tracking a subject at distance.
Specifications: the manufacturer sheet for home security products and the matching Amazon product page. Prices and availability: Keepa. Every figure on this page names its source.
A mains-powered dome camera with a bright floodlight, person tracking and continuous recording to a card. DEKCO states 2K, 350° of pan, an IP66 housing and two-way audio.
Best for: A driveway or yard where the camera should record continuously rather than in clips.
Reolink states 4K with color night images, a genuine three-times optical zoom, dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and auto-tracking across a 355° sweep, with custom detection zones and continuous recording.
Best for: A property where a face or a license plate at distance actually has to be readable.
Two lenses in one housing — a wide one that keeps the whole scene and a telephoto one that follows a subject — combined into a single tracked image. Reolink states 4K full color day and night, dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and storage to card, FTP or its own hub.
Best for: The one camera on a property that has to both watch everything and identify somebody.
