ToniTec TEC440 30/30K review
The thumbturn version of the TEC440: a knob on the inside instead of a keyway, so the door opens from within without a key. Same Titalium body and six reversible keys.
The conclusion A thumbturn cylinder suited to most front doors, and the one that smart locks fitted over a thumbturn require. Check nothing outside can reach the knob.
This is the same TEC440 with a knob on the inside instead of a keyway. That single difference changes what the door is for.
Like the keyed version, it is made by ABUS. The listing gives it the emergency and danger function, with the cylinder still operable from both sides, an anodised finish against corrosion and a code card to reorder keys or a matching cylinder.
Getting out is a specification too
A cylinder that needs a key on both sides is a door that cannot be opened from
inside without finding one. In an ordinary week that is an irritation. In a
fire it is the reason people are told to keep a key in the lock — which then
blocks the cylinder from outside unless it has an emergency function.
A thumbturn removes the whole problem. For any door on an escape route, it is
the right answer.
The one situation where it is wrong
When somebody outside can reach it. A glazed side panel, a mailbox within
arm’s length of the lock, a hole cut in a panel — any of these turn a
thumbturn into an external handle. On those doors, a keyed cylinder with an
emergency function, or a mailbox guard, is the answer instead.
Look at your own door before deciding. It takes ten seconds and it is the
whole decision.
The smart lock connection
Smart locks that fit over a thumbturn, such as the Aqara U200 or the SwitchBot Lock Ultra, need it. If your door is keyed on both sides, this cylinder is their prerequisite — and it costs
a fraction of the lock that will sit on it.
Who it suits
Most front doors, and every door about to receive a smart lock of that kind.

The questions we are asked
Is a thumbturn less secure?
In one specific situation, yes: where somebody outside can reach it. A glazed panel next to the door, a mailbox close to the lock, or a cat flap in the wrong place all turn a thumbturn into a handle for anyone who can get an arm or a tool through. On a solid door with no opening near the lock, it is not a weakness.
Why would I want one anyway?
Because getting out matters. A door that needs a key from the inside is a door somebody cannot open in a hurry, and the key is never where it should be. For most households, and for any door on an escape route, a thumbturn is the correct choice.
Do smart locks need this?
Those that fit over a thumbturn do, such as the Aqara U200 or the SwitchBot Lock Ultra. Not all of them use the same cylinder type: check the lock’s compatibility list before changing yours. If your door has a keyed cylinder on both sides, this is the part you change first, and it is far cheaper than the lock that goes over it.

30/30 mm (1.18 in) · anti-pick pins · emergency function · 5 reversible keys · code card
ABUS's everyday euro cylinder: special pins for pick and manipulation resistance, an emergency function that works with a key in the other side, and five reversible keys with a code card for reordering.
Best for: Replacing a builder's cylinder on a front door, at the smallest sensible price.
40/50 mm (1.97 in) · usable in either orientation · anti-pick pins · emergency function · 5 keys
The same D6XNP cylinder in 40/50, for a thicker door or a door with a heavier handle set. ABUS states it can be fitted in either orientation, with the same emergency function, pins and code card.
Best for: A thicker door, or one where the 30/30 measured short.
Two 30/30 cylinders keyed alike · 10 keys · emergency function · tested to EN 1303:2015
Two cylinders that take the same key, with ten keys between them. BASI states the V55 range is tested to EN 1303:2015 and supplied direct from the manufacturer, with an emergency function on both.
Best for: A front and back door, or a house and a garage, that should share one key.
