VisorTech NC9438-944 review

A pair of dome shells with semi-transparent bubbles and a red warning LED, each running on three AA cells. VisorTech publishes the dimensions and weight; there is no camera inside either of them.

The conclusion Two shells for the price of one real accessory. Fit them dark and away from close inspection.

A pair of dome shells, each with a bubble, a molded lens and a red LED. Neither contains a camera. Nothing is recorded, ever, and if an incident happens in front of one there is no footage of any kind.

The bubble, and what the listing says

VisorTech describes a semi-transparent housing, but the listing title speaks of a transparent dome: check the photo before relying on it. On a real dome camera you cannot see which way the lens is pointing, and that ambiguity is most of the psychological effect. A decoy with a clear bubble and an obviously hollow inside loses it at three meters; a smoked one does not.

The batteries, and whether to bother

Three AA cells per shell, not supplied, to run a blinking LED. It is a recurring cost for a feature that arguably makes the decoy less convincing: real cameras rarely flash while recording. Fitting them dark loses nothing.

Where to put them

High, at a distance, and away from anywhere somebody can stand and study them. A decoy works on a glance from the pavement and fails on inspection. Anything within arm’s reach should be a real camera or nothing.

Who it suits

A property with two secondary corners and real cameras already covering the approaches that matter.

What reassures, and what does not

Strengths

  • Two shells in one box
  • Mounting hardware supplied with each shell
  • Battery powered, so no cable to fake
  • Dimensions and weight published, which is unusual in this family

Compromises

  • Records nothing — no sensor, no card, no footage
  • Batteries not supplied, and three AA cells per shell is a running cost for an LED
  • Light plastic housing that reads as light plastic at close range
  • The blinking LED is the standard giveaway

The questions we are asked

Why does a semi-transparent bubble help?

Because a real dome camera is hard to see into, so the eye cannot tell where it is pointing. A shell with a clear bubble and an obviously empty inside gives itself away instantly; a smoked one keeps the ambiguity that makes the deterrent work at all. On this model the listing says both — a semi-transparent housing in the description, a transparent dome in the title — so check the photo before relying on it.

Three AA cells to run an LED?

VisorTech publishes no runtime. It is a recurring cost for little benefit, and the shell is arguably more convincing with the LED off: running it without batteries loses nothing.

Is a pair better value?

Only if you have two places to put them. Two decoys on one small frontage look like what they are; one decoy at a side gate and one at a rear corner, alongside real cameras at the front, is a coherent arrangement.
