Capacity in a security camera is not storage. It is time.

What doubling the card actually buys

Days. A camera overwrites its oldest footage when the card is full, so the capacity decides how far back you can look. If your camera fills a 128 GB card in five days, a 256 GB card gives you ten — and ten days covers a holiday where five does not.

That is the whole reason to buy the larger card.

The compatibility check

Look up your camera’s maximum card size before ordering. Older cameras cap at 128 GB, and a larger card in one of them either is not recognized or behaves strangely. It is the commonest reason cards come back.

What it does not change

Endurance. This is the same class of card as the 128 GB version, and in a continuously-recording camera it wears at the same rate per write. A larger card is rewritten less often, which helps a little; a high-endurance card is what actually addresses it.

The questions we are asked

Will my camera take 256 GB?

Check the manual. Cameras publish a maximum card size and older ones frequently stop at 128 GB — a larger card in such a camera either is not recognized or behaves unpredictably. It is the first thing to confirm and the commonest reason a card is returned.

Does more capacity mean better?

It means more days before the oldest footage is overwritten, which is exactly what most people want. A bigger card in the same camera is also rewritten less often, which delays its wear, but endurance rating is what actually governs longevity.
