ABUS FAS101 review
A hinge-side security bolt for inward-opening windows — the side almost nobody reinforces. ABUS states the bolt protects up to one metric ton of pressure and rates it at security level 10 on its own scale.
The conclusion The one people leave out, and the one that decides whether the others matter. Fit it alongside a handle-side lock, not instead.
Almost every window lock sold is for the handle side. A window levered on the hinge
side leaves the frame with its hinges attached, and every handle-side lock in
the house is still engaged when it happens.
Why the hinge side is ignored
Because it looks solid. The hinges are metal, they are screwed to the frame,
and they clearly hold the window shut. What they hold it against is being
pulled open, not being prised sideways out of the recess — and once the leaf
has moved a few millimeters, the hinge pins are irrelevant.
What ABUS states
A bolt designed to resist up to one metric ton of pressure, and security level 10
on the company’s own scale, which it applies across its range
and which goes above 10. Both figures are ABUS’s, reported here as such: this site is not a
testing body.
The frame is the honest limit. A bolt rated to a metric ton, screwed into a lining
that splits at a fraction of that, is a bolt rated to whatever the lining
holds.
Fit it as a pair
This is a complement to a handle-side lock, not a substitute. Securing one
side and not the other moves the problem rather than solving it, and the two
together are what makes the window awkward on both edges.
Who it suits
Anybody who has already fitted handle-side locks and thinks the job is done.

The questions we are asked
Why does the hinge side need a lock?
Because a window levered on the hinge side comes out of its frame complete with the hinges, and every lock on the handle side is still engaged when it does. Reinforcing one side and not the other simply moves the attack. This is the product for the side people forget.
What does "up to one metric ton" mean?
It is the manufacturer's statement of the pressure the bolt is designed to resist. It is a figure ABUS publishes and not one measured here, and it describes the bolt rather than the frame it is screwed to — which is usually what gives way first.
Do I need this as well as a handle-side lock?
Yes. It is not an alternative. A window wants securing on both sides, and the two ABUS products in this hub are designed as a pair rather than as competitors.

Bolt lock, inward-opening windows · 4-pin cylinder · keyed alike · ABUS level 5 · key to open only
A bolt-action window lock for inward-opening windows and French windows. ABUS states a four-pin cylinder, keyed-alike operation, and a mechanism that locks by pushing — the key is needed only to open it.
Best for: Ground-floor windows that get locked every night, where hunting for a key each time would end the habit.
Five window locks · push-button, no key · M5×50 screws supplied · white
The five-unit box of BASI's keyless window bolt, for a house with more accessible windows than a three-pack covers. Same push-button mechanism and same 50 mm (1.97 in) screws.
Best for: A house with five or more reachable windows — usually a front, a back and a side.
Three window locks · push-button locking, no key · M5×50 self-tapping screws supplied · white
Three window security bolts operated by push button rather than by key, which BASI states lock by hand and release quickly. Each comes with four M5 × 50 mm (0.20 × 1.97 in) self-tapping screws.
Best for: Doing every ground-floor window at once, without a key for each.
