BURG-WÄCHTER Key Safe 10 SB review
A wall-mounted key safe in zinc die-cast with an internal hook for keys up to 7 cm (2.8 in), a four-digit resettable code and an auto-stop feature, from a German safe manufacturer.
The conclusion The small key box from a safe maker. Measure your key against the 7 cm (2.8 in) limit first.
BURG-WÄCHTER’s main business is safes, and this is a key box built by a
company that makes them. That should show in the casting and the dial rather than in
any certification — no key box at this price is certified to anything.
Auto-stop, and what it does not do
According to BURG-WÄCHTER, the numbers click into place when the right combination is dialed, which makes opening easier in poor light. They do not reset when the box closes, and that is how key safe codes are actually discovered: somebody closes it in a hurry, the numbers stay where they were, and the next person to walk past reads them.
So scramble the dials after every closing: no mechanism does it for you.
The 7 cm (2.8 in) limit
Keys up to 7 cm (2.8 in) on the internal hook. That is an ordinary door key and not a
long security key, and it is certainly not a key on a fob. Measure the key you
intend to leave before ordering — the gap between what fits and what people
assumed fits is the most common complaint in this whole family.
The usual rules
Masonry, through-bolted, out of sight of the street, not beside the door it
opens, and the code changed twice a year. None of that is specific to this
product and all of it decides whether it works.
Who it suits
A permanent arrangement — a carer, a cleaner, a regular visitor — on a wall
that can take fixings.

The questions we are asked
Does the brand matter on a key safe?
A little. BURG-WÄCHTER's main business is safes, which should show in the casting and the mechanism rather than in any rating — no key box at this price is certified to anything. What you are buying is a company with a reason to care about the hinge and the dial.
What is auto-stop?
According to BURG-WÄCHTER, the numbers click into place when the right combination is dialed, which makes opening easier in poor light. It does not reset the dials when the box closes: scramble them yourself, or the code stays showing.
Will my key fit?
Up to 7 cm (2.8 in) on the internal hook, which covers ordinary door keys and excludes long security keys and anything on a fob. Measure the key you intend to leave rather than assuming — it is the commonest complaint about every box in this family.
