A key safe is only as good as what it is bolted to · review
GRIFEMA GA1004 review
The hanging version of GRIFEMA's key safe: a shackle rather than a wall plate, room for five keys and a card, and a removable key rack. 558 grams of zinc alloy with a four-digit code.
The conclusion The one for when drilling is not allowed, with the honest caveat that anything hanging can be taken away.
This is the same idea as a wall-mounted key safe with one difference that
changes the risk: it hangs.
What that means
A bolted box has to be attacked where it is, in whatever light and time is
available. A hanging box can be lifted off, carried somewhere quiet, and opened
at leisure with a vice and a hacksaw. The code becomes irrelevant to somebody
with an hour.
That is not a reason never to use one. It is a reason to prefer a wall-mounted
box whenever drilling is possible, and to reserve this for tenancies, holiday
lets and temporary arrangements where it is not.
Where it should not hang
On the handle of the door it opens. Vacation rentals do this constantly, and it
tells anybody walking past exactly what the box is for and which door it
serves. A railing at the side, a gate, a downpipe bracket — anywhere less
obvious.
The capacity
Five keys and a card, on a removable rack. For a property with a front door, a
back door and a communal entrance that is the right size, and taking the rack
out to find one key is easier than fishing in a box in the dark.
Who it suits
Tenants, vacation rentals, and any arrangement where a wall cannot be drilled.

Compromises
A hanging box can be carried away and opened elsewhere, at leisure
558 g (19.7 oz) of zinc alloy, not a safe

The questions we are asked
Is a hanging key safe a bad idea?
It is a worse idea than a bolted one, and sometimes the only one available. A box that hangs can be removed and opened somewhere quiet with tools and time, which is a fundamentally different problem from one bolted to a wall. Use it where nothing may be drilled, and prefer a wall-mounted box wherever you can.
Where should it hang?
Not on the door handle of the property it opens, which is where vacation rentals habitually put them and is the clearest possible signal. A railing round the side, a gate, anywhere it is not the first thing a visitor sees.
Five keys — is that useful?
For a rental with a front door, a back door, a communal entrance and a trash enclosure, yes. The removable rack makes retrieving one key without dropping the rest genuinely easier, which sounds trivial until you are doing it in the rain.

Best for: A coastal or exposed wall, where the dials rather than the box are what fails.
