BURG-WÄCHTER WinSafe WS 11 W review
A lockable window security bolt in a zinc die-cast housing, which BURG-WÄCHTER states can be fitted on the top, bottom or handle side of a window or balcony door with a few holes.
The conclusion The one to buy when the handle side is not the right place. Fit two on anything tall.
Most window locks assume the handle side is where the lock goes. On many
windows it is not.
Where a window actually gives
A tall casement flexes in the middle. A balcony door is levered near the
bottom, where the leaf is heaviest and the frame least supported. A wide
window twists. The point of failure depends on the window, and a lock that can
only be fitted in one place is a lock that sometimes goes in the wrong one.
BURG-WÄCHTER states this unit fits top, bottom or handle side. That is the
reason to choose it.
One or two
One lock is one point. On anything tall or wide, two — top and bottom — stop
the leaf being flexed far enough to release. Push a corner of the window with
your hand: wherever it moves is where the second one belongs.
The material
Zinc die-cast rather than folded sheet metal. It resists twisting and peeling,
which is what a small window lock is asked to do. It is not hardened steel and
this page does not pretend otherwise.
The key
This one needs the key to lock as well as to open, which is less convenient
than push-to-lock designs. Hang the key within reach of the window and out of
sight of the glass — a locked window with the key downstairs is a problem in a
fire.
Who it suits
Balcony doors, tall casements, and any window where the handle side is not the
weak point.

The questions we are asked
Why does fitting position matter?
Because a window is levered where it is weakest, and that is not always the handle. A tall casement flexes in the middle; a balcony door is often attacked at the bottom. Being able to fix at the top, the bottom or the handle side means the lock goes where the window needs it rather than where the packaging assumed.
Do I need one or two?
One is a locking point. On a tall or wide casement, two — at top and bottom — stop the leaf being flexed enough to disengage. Look at the window and imagine pulling its corner: where it moves most is where the second lock belongs.
Zinc die-cast — is that good?
It is a solid casting rather than folded sheet, which resists being twisted or peeled. It is not hardened steel, and no listing here claims it is. For a retrofit window lock it is the appropriate material.

A hinge-side security bolt for inward-opening windows — the side almost nobody reinforces. ABUS states the bolt protects up to one metric ton of pressure and rates it at security level 10 on its own scale.
Best for: The half of the window that every other lock in this hub ignores.
Bolt lock, inward-opening windows · 4-pin cylinder · keyed alike · ABUS level 5 · key to open only
A bolt-action window lock for inward-opening windows and French windows. ABUS states a four-pin cylinder, keyed-alike operation, and a mechanism that locks by pushing — the key is needed only to open it.
Best for: Ground-floor windows that get locked every night, where hunting for a key each time would end the habit.
Five window locks · push-button, no key · M5×50 screws supplied · white
The five-unit box of BASI's keyless window bolt, for a house with more accessible windows than a three-pack covers. Same push-button mechanism and same 50 mm (1.97 in) screws.
Best for: A house with five or more reachable windows — usually a front, a back and a side.
