Tapo C425 review

TP-Link's battery camera: 2K on a 142° lens, a 10,000 mAh cell, a magnetic base that grips any iron surface, and person, pet and vehicle detection included rather than sold as a subscription feature.

The conclusion A 2K battery camera whose AI detection is stated as free, with a magnetic base and a 142° field of view. Mount it on screws where it matters.

The C425 is TP-Link’s battery camera and its main advantage is what it does not charge for: per TP-Link, person, pet and vehicle detection that is included rather than rented, and no hub to buy, since it connects straight to Wi-Fi.

The subscription question, answered properly

On several cameras in this price band, classification is a paid feature. Until you pay, the camera notifies on everything that moves — which is every cat, every branch and every set of headlights — and the notifications are what make people switch a camera off. TP-Link states the AI detection here is free. Multiply the difference by three years before comparing prices.

The magnetic base

It grips any iron surface and it lets a camera be repositioned in seconds while you work out where it should live. It also comes off in seconds, which is the whole point and also the risk. Use the magnet while you are deciding, and the screw fixing once you have decided — particularly anywhere within reach.

Battery and solar

A 10,000 mAh cell with support for a solar panel, sold separately. TP-Link does not publish the daily event count behind its runtime figure, so we do not convert it into weeks. What holds regardless is that placement decides runtime: a camera facing a quiet garden lasts far longer than the same camera facing a sidewalk.

Night, audio and storage

At night, TP-Link states a color image from built-in spotlights and a Starlight sensor. Audio is two-way, activity zones are set in the app, and recording goes to a microSD card of up to 512 GB or to Tapo Care cloud storage, by subscription.

Who it suits

Anyone wanting a battery camera to live with rather than to fight. What it pays for is the included detection, the magnetic base, the large battery and color at night.

What reassures, and what does not

Strengths

  • AI person, pet and vehicle detection at no extra cost, stated by TP-Link
  • Magnetic base — mounts on any iron surface with no drilling
  • 10,000 mAh cell, and solar panel support for continuous power
  • 142° field of view on a 2K sensor, so a wide scene stays usable

Compromises

  • A magnetic base is as quick to remove as it is to fit
  • Runtime is stated without the daily event count it assumes
  • No pan or tilt — the view is fixed once positioned
  • Solar panel sold separately

The questions we are asked

Is free AI detection unusual?

It is worth checking on every camera you consider. Several manufacturers place person and vehicle classification behind a subscription, which means the camera you bought notifies on everything until you pay. TP-Link states it is included here, and over three years that is a real difference in cost.

Is a magnetic base secure?

It is convenient and it is not secure. The camera comes off in a second, by design, which is why it goes above reach or on a screw fixing where it matters. Use the magnet for a position you expect to change and the screws for one you do not.

Does it pan?

No. It is a fixed 142° view, which is wide enough to cover a doorway and a path from one position but has to be aimed correctly at installation. If you want a battery camera that sweeps, this hub has several, such as the COOAU C5 or the Yesyamo C8T-N.
