ToniTec TEC440 30/30K vs ABUS D6XNP 30/30

Thumbturn or key on the inside?

Same size, same job, one difference that matters more than any specification in this hub: whether the door can be opened from inside without finding a key. That is a safety decision, not a security one.

A tick marks the better answer on that line only. Counting ticks does not decide the page — the two verdicts below do, because these products answer different questions.

Which of the two, for which home

Buy the ToniTec TEC440 30/30K

Buy the thumbturn version for a front door on an escape route, and for a door that may later take a smart lock fitted over a thumbturn, such as the Aqara U200 or the SwitchBot Lock Ultra.

Buy the ABUS D6XNP 30/30

Buy the keyed version where glazing or a mailbox puts the inside of the door within reach from outside, and accept that a key must then live somewhere everybody knows.

The questions we are asked

Which is safer in a fire?

The thumbturn. A door that needs a key from the inside is a door for which a key has to be found while a house fills with smoke. The ABUS emergency function lets a key stay in the inside, but it only helps if the key really is left there; the thumbturn does not depend on that habit.

When is a thumbturn wrong?

When somebody can reach it. Glass panels beside or in the door, a mailbox close to the lock, or a cat flap at the wrong height all turn a thumbturn into a handle. In those cases the keyed cylinder is correct, and the key discipline is the price.

30/30 with inside thumbturn · Titalium · 6 keys · for doors opened without a key inside
