KOTARBAU Monoblock 60 mm review
A monoblock cast-iron padlock: the body encloses the shackle so that very little of it is exposed. KOTARBAU states a chrome-plated hardened steel bolt in a solid cast body.
The conclusion The shrouded shackle is worth more than every other feature in this hub. Measure the hasp before ordering.
The other padlocks in this hub leave their shackle exposed and are defeated the same way: jaws either
side of the shackle, and squeeze. This one does not offer anywhere to put
them.
Why shrouding beats everything else
A padlock is attacked at its shackle, and a bolt cropper needs to get on both
sides of it. A monoblock body wraps the shackle so that only a few millimeters
are visible, and those few millimeters are inside a cast-iron shoulder. There
is no combination of hardening, keyway or brand name that changes a lock’s
resistance as much as removing the target does.
If you buy one padlock on this site for something that matters, buy a shrouded
one.
The cost, and it is real
Clearance. A shrouded lock has almost no gap under the shackle, so it will not
pass through a thick hasp, a heavy chain link or an eye bolt of any size.
Measure what the lock has to go through first — this is the commonest reason a
shrouded padlock is returned.
The material
Cast iron: resistant to cutting and abrasion, more brittle than forged steel
under a heavy hammer. KOTARBAU publishes no security grade, so nothing further
is claimed here.
Who it suits
A shed, a store, a gate — anywhere the lock is protecting something worth
carrying away.

What reassures, and what does not
Strengths
Monoblock construction shrouds the shackle — the single biggest step up in this family
Solid cast-iron body rather than aluminum
Chrome-plated hardened bolt resists corrosion as well as cutting
Inexpensive for a shrouded design
Compromises
Heavy, and it will mark a painted gate
Very little shackle clearance — it will not reach through a thick hasp
No published security level or standard
Cast iron is brittle: it resists cutting better than it resists a heavy hammer

The questions we are asked
What does monoblock mean here?
That the body is a single casting which wraps around the shackle, leaving only a few millimeters exposed. Bolt croppers need jaws either side of the steel, and a shrouded shackle simply does not give them anywhere to sit. It is the most effective change available in a padlock.
What is the trade?
Clearance. A shrouded lock has almost no gap, so it will not pass through a thick hasp or a big chain link. Measure what it has to go through before ordering, because a lock that does not fit is a lock that gets replaced with a worse one.
Cast iron — strong or brittle?
Both. It resists cutting and abrasion well, and it is more brittle than forged steel under a heavy hammer blow. KOTARBAU publishes no grade — the ABUS Titalium locks here state ABUS level 5 or 6 — so this is the general property of the material rather than a claim about this lock.
Our score

Against the rest of the padlocks
Between security devices of the same category and nearby price. Shown: what they all state. A half-filled column says nothing.
A freely rotating hardened steel shackle with heel-and-toe locking, in a D-shaped body stated to grant very little access for bolt cutters or saws. Heel-and-toe means the shackle is secured at both ends, so cutting one side does not open the lock — both legs must be cut. It is the strongest shackle arrangement on this shelf
