Lutranstra PR5000 review

A trail camera that makes its own Wi-Fi so a phone can collect the images without a card reader. Lutranstra states 4K video, 46 infrared LEDs at 940 nm reaching 25 m (82 ft), an IP66 housing and a 32 GB card in the box.

The conclusion Bought for the app, not for the sensor. It removes the card reader from the process, and nothing more than that.

The advantage of this camera is a small, real one that gets exaggerated in listings: you can collect its images while standing in front of it, without unclipping it or carrying a card reader.

What the Wi-Fi does and does not do

It is a local hotspot. Your phone joins it at the camera, the TrailCam Go app pulls the files, and you walk away. It does not send anything to your house. A camera that reports remotely needs a SIM and a data plan, and that is a different and more expensive kind of product.

For a camera at the end of your own land, the difference is having to visit — which you were going to do anyway — rather than having to dismantle.

The cost of using it

The radio is the hungriest component in the camera. Transferring a folder of 4K clips over Wi-Fi is the most expensive operation it performs, and a habit of pulling everything on every visit will halve the runtime. Pull what you need, or take the card when there is a lot.

What is in the box

A 32 GB card, a reader, a strap and cables. That is unusually complete, and the card is small for 4K — treat it as a starter rather than as the answer.

The trigger

Lutranstra states 0.1 to 0.3 seconds, behind a 120° lens — a published figure, as with the GardePro E8 and the HSSNS in this hub.

Who it suits

Somebody who visits the camera and wants the visit to be short.

  • 32 GB card, reader, straps and cables supplied
  • 46 × 940 nm no-glow LEDs stated to reach 25 m (82 ft)
  • 4K video from a 4 MP color CMOS sensor

Compromises

  • The hotspot is local: you must be standing at the camera, not at home
  • Eight AA batteries not supplied
  • Wi-Fi transfer drains batteries noticeably
  • A 32 GB card is small for 4K video

The questions we are asked

Does it send images to my phone at home?

No. The camera creates its own local Wi-Fi network, which your phone joins while you are standing next to it. It saves unclipping the camera and finding a card reader; it does not save the journey. Cameras that send images remotely need a SIM and a data plan, which is a different product.

Is the supplied 32 GB card enough?

For stills, comfortably. For 4K video it is small — a few hundred clips at most. It is a genuine convenience to have one in the box, and most owners will add a larger one.

Does using the Wi-Fi cost battery?

Yes, noticeably. The radio is the hungriest part of the camera, and transferring a folder of 4K clips over it is the most expensive thing you can ask it to do. Transfer what you need rather than everything, or take the card when the visit is long.
