Reolink RLK8-800B4 review

The 4K version of Reolink's wired kit: four 8 MP bullet cameras at 20 fps, an eight-channel recorder with a 2 TB drive pre-installed, and detection that filters branches and insects out of the alerts.

The conclusion The most capable wired kit here and the hungriest for storage. Buy it when detail is the point, not when coverage is.

This is the top of the wired hub, and the reason to choose it is narrow and worth being precise about: 4K exists so that footage can be handed to somebody who was not there and still be useful.

When that matters, and when it does not

If the purpose of the system is to know what happened in your own yard, 5 MP answers it and keeps noticeably more history on the same drive. If the purpose is a recording that has to describe a person or a vehicle to a third party, resolution stops being a luxury.

Most households want the first. Buy this when you want the second.

The storage arithmetic, plainly

Four 4K cameras recording continuously will fill a 2 TB drive in days. Reolink supplies the drive fitted and the system works out of the box; the setting that turns days into weeks is recording on detection rather than continuously, and lowering the frame rate on cameras watching a static scene. Neither costs anything.

Bullets rather than domes

Aimed precisely, no bubble to haze at night, and a hood that keeps rain off the lens. On a driveway or at a gate, where the angle is the whole point, that is the right housing.

Who it suits

A property where the recording has to answer a question rather than confirm that something occurred.

The questions we are asked

Will 2 TB be enough at 4K?

For continuous recording on four cameras, it is days rather than weeks. Two things extend it: recording on detection instead of continuously, and lowering the frame rate on cameras watching static scenes. Both are settings, and both are worth making before you decide the drive is too small.

Bullets or domes?

Bullets aim precisely, have no bubble to clean and shed rain off their own hoods. Domes are harder to knock out of alignment and less obtrusive. For a driveway or a gate where the angle matters, bullets are the better tool — which is what this kit uses.

Is 4K worth it over the 5 MP kit?

Only if identification matters. At short distances a 5 MP camera shows the essentials and keeps noticeably more history on the same drive. Buy 4K when the footage might have to be given to somebody who was not there.
