GRIFEMA GD402-2 review

A 20 W motion floodlight at 2,200 lumens and 6500 K, rated IP66, with three separate adjustments: sensitivity, on-time and the ambient light level below which it will trigger.

The conclusion Three adjustment dials at the lowest price here. Set the LUX dial properly and keep the on-time short.

A motion-activated light works by change. Something dark suddenly lights, a neighbor looks up, and the person standing in it knows they have been seen. A light that is on all night is scenery.

The three dials are the product

SENS sets how sensitive the sensor is. TIME sets how long the light stays on. LUX sets how dark it must be before the sensor works at all.

The last one is the one people leave wrong. Set fully counterclockwise, the light triggers in daylight — wasting energy, annoying the household and wearing out a light that should have been resting. Set it so the light only works after dusk.

And keep TIME short. A minute is usually plenty; ten minutes means the light is on for most of the night after a cat crosses the garden, and it is no longer telling anybody anything.

The color

6500 K, a hard blue-white. It is effective and it looks like a parking lot. Warmer lights around 3000 K are just as good at revealing an approach and considerably better to live beside — which matters, because the light that gets disconnected after complaints protects nothing.

What GRIFEMA publishes

Detection from 2 to 12 m (7 to 39 ft) across 180°, an on-time of 7 to 300 seconds and a 120° beam. The sensor covers wider than the light, so aim the fitting at where people approach.

Who it suits

A first security light, on a wall where the neighbors are not close.

What reassures, and what does not

Strengths

  • Three separate adjustments — sensitivity, time and daylight threshold
  • 2,200 lm from 20 W, and the figures are published together
  • IP66 stated
  • Cheapest light in this hub

Compromises

  • 6500 K is a harsh, blue-white light that neighbors notice
  • A 120° beam for 180° detection: the edges of the detected area stay dark
  • Cheap floodlights fail at the gasket rather than the LED
  • Small brand, no published lifetime

The questions we are asked

What is the LUX dial for?

It sets how dark it has to be before the light will trigger at all. Wound fully counterclockwise the light comes on in daylight, which wastes energy and annoys everybody; set correctly it only works after dusk. It is the adjustment most often left wrong.

Is 6500 K a problem?

It is a harsh blue-white, the color of a parking lot. It is what makes a cheap light look cheap, and it is what neighbors complain about. Warmer lights around 3000 K look far better on a house and are no less effective at showing an approach.

How long should the on-time be?

As short as is useful — a minute is usually plenty. A light that stays on for ten minutes after a cat crosses the garden is a light that is on most of the night, and a light that is always on has stopped being a signal.

What buyers actually choose

Amazon reports what buyers took in the month before this page was last checked: at least 500.
